My name is Tim Irving and I’m a playground construction expert.

I’ve been a carpenter for over 20 years and I specialise in the design and construction of nature-based playgrounds.

Down2Earth’s philosophy

There are three things that make a great playground. They are part of my guiding philosophy for every playground I build.

First, it has to be fun and engaging. A playground has to not only look great, it has to give kids lots of opportunities for play, social interaction, and problem, solving.

Second, a playground has to be challenging. My playgrounds are safe, but not boring. Research has shown children learn risk assessment skills by playing in a challenging play environment.

Third, it has to look great. A playground has to appeal to kids as soon as they see it. Aside from that, a beautiful playground is advertising for your school or business.

Nature playground design

The design process is extremely important. My goal is to listen to your needs and create a playground that is not only beautiful and within your budget, but also one that maximises opportunities for gross motor development, promotes physical activity, encourages social interaction, supports creativity and problem-solving and, of course, encourages interaction with nature.

Once I know exactly what you’re after for your dream nature playground, I’ll create a detailed 3D digital model of your proposed playground, including a flythrough view to help you envisage the finished product.

Our full design package for larger designs includes:

An onsite consultation with me at your school or business where I’ll discuss your vision with you and make suggestions as to how to make the best use of your space
I will measure your space and draw up the existing playground to ensure that the design is representative of the finished product
We will then create a bespoke design for you that will include both a 2D plan of the playground as well as 3D sketches of the key elements so you can see what the finished items will look like
We’ll then make any necessary edits and provide you with a PDF of the design

Once the design has been approved, we’ll build your playground to the highest standard while adhering to Kidsafe regulations.

I personally train and supervise my team. They’re all passionate about building safe, engaging and beautiful nature playgrounds.

I don’t cut corners on the materials I use to build your playground. I use the highest quality materials. They are sustainably sourced, and include native hardwoods.

Many nature based playground companies are owned by landscapers, with the construction work outsourced to subcontractors. This can cause issues with quality control and blown out timeframes, and also typically means higher company overheads which can drive up prices.

A playground needs to be built to Australian building standards. Sounds obvious, right? But if landscapers are building your playground, they may not have the necessary training in how to build safe structures. All of our playgrounds are built by carpenters and include a Kidsafe safety audit upon completion and handover.
